PITTSBURGH – The Nashville Predators fans are dedicated to their team. The hockey media has taken note of their proclivity for country music Superstar anthem singers, NFL player fans, party atmosphere and catfish. That last part is not autocorrect. Before each playoff game at home, the Preds fans chuck a giant catfish onto the ice.
Apparently Nashville being, unique? Creative? Resourceful? Lets just go with unique.
Being somewhat new to hockey and the playoffs, back in 2003, the fans decided to put a southern spin on the the tradition that the RedWings have of throwing dead octopi onto the ice before playoff games. While the symbolism of the octopus represented how many wins needed Detroit needed to for cup, the catfish is, well, a catfish. Guess the Piggly Wiggly was all out of cephalopods.
The catfish might just symbolize the south and the fans apparently love it. So have at it Nashville. The real question is how they get those things past security. You can’t help but feel bad for the fan that sits next to the guy that snuck a 30 pound catfish in under his shirt.
Party on Nashville.
