In Detroit, the Nashville Predators got back n the win column with a 7-1 demolition of the Red Wings, on Thursday night.
Viktor Arvidsson scored a hat trick for the Preds.
“That’s pretty good for a birthday,” Arvidsson said on his 28th birthday.
Juuse Saros made 25 saves to get the win.
“We’re a pretty confident group, and we are on a mission,” Nashville’s Erik Haula said. “We know we have a good team, but we’ve got 15 games to go and we have to keep the pedal down.”
Darren Helm‘s goal in the second period broke the ice in the game and gave the Wings a 1-0 lead.
“We’ve had a few games lately where we haven’t responded well to falling behind, and that results in games like this,” Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill said. “This was a major step backward.”
From there, it was all downhill.
Nashville scored three in the middle frame and four in the third period.
Arvidsson tied the game 1-1.
Erik Haula, Nick Cousins and Mikael Granlund gave the Predators a 4-1 lead.
“I was really disappointed with the way we came out for the third period,” Blashill said. “It was only 3-1 and we still had a chance to get back into the game, but we came out and played a stupid period of hockey.”
Arvidsson completed his hat trick in the third period and Yakov Trenin popped in a goal for the 7-1 final.
“He (Arvidsson) expects to score goals,” Predators head coach John Hynes said, “and hopefully tonight will be a springboard to more success.”
Jonathan Bernier made 25 saves in the loss.
“We hung [Bernier] out to dry tonight, and that’s on every one of us,” Detroit’s Luke Glendening said. “Here’s a guy who has been great for us all season and is coming back from an injury, and we didn’t do anything to help him.”
