Morgan Cey welcomed back to the Eagles’ flock

LOVELAND , Colo. – When the Edmonton Oilers’ AHL affiliate, the Springfield Falcons called on   Eagles goalie Andrew Penner to join their netminding

corps, it left a position open in the Colorado line-up. Penner (13-4-2), now in his second season with the Eagles, left the net minding duties in the capable hand of Mike Mole. Penner and Mike Mole have shared the net with Penner having a slight edge in the number of games played thus far in the season. With Mole (10-3-1) as the designated number one, the organization only had to look in their own backyard to find a fitting back-up. Last summer, when back-up goalie Morgan Cey was advised that he would ” not be re-signed, he chose to retire from playing. But Cey , his wife, Liz, and newborn daughter, Isabel, chose to continue to make Northern Colorado their home.

At the end of last Season I got to talking with Aaron Grosul and I was really excited about a position with Northern Colorado Youth Hockey,” Cey explained. “I was ready to move on.”  Grosul, a former Eagles defenseman, manages the youth program based in nearby Windsor, Colorado. Always looking to improve and enhance instruction for the hockey program, Cey was a perfect candidate to assist young goaltenders in honing their skills. “My wife and I loved the area and we decided we wanted to stick around”, Cey said.  “In the back of my mind I knew that this might happen (a call up or injury opening a roster spot), but I was not really preparing for it or expecting it…I am just trying to fill the role as best I can.”

For the Eagles, it’s a great benefit to have a number of retired players who make their homes in the Northern Colorado area available to fill in on an emergency basis. For Cey, it’s no problem to make himself available to his old team while Penner is away. “I was really enjoying my life, post hockey,” Cey went on to state, “But the Eagles were really great to my wife and me and they needed some help so I just said I would try to do my best to help them out.” Contact the author/photographer at terry.sanford@prohockeynews.com
