SOUTHAVEN, Miss. – Mike Moran issues four points (2A, 2G) in the Mississippi RiverKings (29-20-3) 7-4 victory over the Columbus Cottonmouths (20-27-4) on Tuesday night in Southaven.
Twenty-eight seconds into the first period, forward Matt Harrington netted a goal through the five hole of Cottonmouth goalie Spencer Bacon to give the RiverKings lead 1-0 lead. Two minutes later, the Cottonmouths moved Brad Barone out of position from his goal and tallied a goal to tie the game. However, a lazer shot by Joe Sova bounced off Bacon’s pads and slid into the net to give the RiverKings a 2-1 lead.
In the second period, the Cottonmouths jumped out of the gate with two goals early in the period. Alex Kromm and Chad Brears tallied two goals within five minutes of one another to give Columbus a 3-2 lead. Yet, the RiverKings responded with a shot from the slot from Dillan Fox that tied the game up at 3-3. With 4:39 on the clock, Mike Moran set up a Brant Sherwood wrist shot to give the RiverKings a 4-3 lead.
Moran earned himself another point by scoring a goal from the point that would advance the RiverKings lead 5-3 in the third period. The Cottonmouths would fight back with a quick shot in front of the goal from right wing Derek Gingera to make it a 5-4 game.
However, Brant Sherwood would extend the lead to 6-4 with his second goal of the game. In the final minute of the period, Mike Moran would find an open net to ensure Mississippi’s 7-4 victory and his four point game.
Brad Barone (18-13-3) secured the victory by stopping 22 of 26 shots while Spencer Bacon (6-8-1) took the loss by diverting 36 of 43 shots by the RiverKings.
