PENSACOLA, Fla. — Mike Moran had a pair of goals and the Mississippi RiverKings (28-19-2) struck twice on the power play as they took a 4-3 victory from the Pensacola
Ice Flyers (21-19-8) on Saturday night in Pensacola.
The teams traded goals in the first period. The Ice Flyers struck first when Stephen Buco slipped a shot past goaltender Peter Di Salvo to put Pensacola ahead 1-0 just 4:50 into the opening frame. The RiverKings countered at the 11:18 mark with Mike Moran’s power play goal on a feed from Sam Higgins to tie the game at one.
The RiverKings opened the second period with a goal in the first minute. Just as his penalty expired, Ryan Marcuz’s shot beat Matt Zenzola to give the RiverKings a 2-1 lead just 35 seconds into the middle frame.
Pensacola scored a pair to regain the lead. Andrew Schmit tied the game at two just over a minute after the Marcuz tally before Brandon Wahlin notched his first goal of the season on a shot that beat Di Salvo to give Pensacola a 3-2 lead. Brad Barone then replaced Peter Di Salvo for the RiverKings between the pipes.
The RiverKings tied the game late in the third. Joe Sova ripped a shot from the blueline on the power play that beat Zenzola to tie the game at three going into the third.
In the third, the RiverKings jumped out to a 4-3 lead. Moran tallied his second of the night on a wrist shot from the left circle to beat the glove of Zenzola giving the RiverKings a one-goal lead once again. The Ice Flyers pulled the goaltender for the extra attacker, but the RiverKings held on for a 4-3 victory.
Peter Di Salvo (10-5-0) stopped 6 of 9 shots against and Brad Barone (16-12-2) stopped all 21 shots against in relief. Matt Zenzola (13-10-7) took the loss after stopping 25 of 29 shots against.
