ROSEMONT, IL The Manitoba Moose (5-3-1-0) looked to gain some swagger on the road against the Chicago Wolves (5-2-0-0) with a 5-1 win Saturday evening at the Allstate Arena.
Wolves defenseman Jalen Chatfield scored the lone goal that would leave the Wolves five-game winning streak come to a fold.
Manitoba’s power play put the hurt on the Wolves and early. The Wolves couldn’t find their game and they were chasing it all night. As more goals went towards the Wolves, it put more of a frustration on them.
Another first for the Wolves this season, it would be not be them scoring the game’s first goal. Forward Kristian Vesalainen fires a biscuit to put the Moose on the board at 7.22 in the first period. Wolves goaltender Eetu Makiniemi stopped Jeff Malott’s shot on the Moose power play, but a rebound would be put in by Moose left wing Kristian Vesalainen.
The Moose would add to their lead 2-0 at 10:24 when Wolves defenseman would make a mistaken pass to Manitoba’s Nicolas Jones in the slot. Jones would make opportunity and saucer one past Makiniemi. The Moose would add 1 more to make it 3-0 at 12:02. Manitoba’s defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic found an open spot for a pass from Ville Heinola and cruise in for a goal.
The Wolves tried to keep a float at 1:07 into the second. Orland Park native David Gust raced down the ice stopping half-wall and tosses a pass across to Chatfield who would then guide the puck over Desrosiers for his third goal of the season.
Manitoba would switch on the momentum back at the Wolves when defenseman Jimmy Oligny scored with 6.7 seconds in the second period to give the Moose a 4-1 lead. Cole Maier would add to that with a empty-net goal in the third.
Makiniemi (3-1-0) notched 25 saves while Manitoba’s Philippe Desrosiers (1-0-0) stopped 22 shots to pick up the win in his season debut.
