In Montreal Saturday, in was a game of two teams going in opposite directions.
The Canadiens dropped a 10-spot on the visiting Detroit Red Wings in a 10-1 decision.
“The way we’ve played lately is more of what we can do and are able to do, and what we want to do because it’s given us the success right now that we’re looking for. We’re a good skating team, now all we’ve got to do is play smart,” Canadiens head coach
Claude Julien said after the win.
Paul Byron notched a hat trick in the win.
“We knew inside the locker room, we keep talking about it, keep believing it, but we were getting frustrated because the result wasn’t there,” the Habs’ Alex Galchenyuk (four assists on the night) said. “And now that the result is there you feel that confident. But at the same time, you can see how quickly things change. We lost seven in a row at the beginning [of the season], now we’ve won five in a row and we never want to feel the way that we felt at the beginning of the year.”
Nicolas Deslauriers, Jacob de la Rose, Daniel Carr, Charles Hudon, Brendan Gallagher, Jordie Benn, and Andrew Shaw all scored for the Canadiens in the rout.
“We’re feeling good about tonight but we can’t forget where we were a week ago and where we sat in the standings, and can’t get too high on ourselves and start to think maybe we’re a little bit better than what we are,” Byron said. “There’s a reason why we’ve had success playing the way we have this week and we can’t stray away from that.”
Carey Price had an easy night with all the offense and picked up his fifth straight win as he made 22 saves.
Price had a shutout going until midway through the third when  Luke Glendening scored to break it up.
“It’s an embarrassment,” Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg said. “I don’t really know where to start. I’ve played professional hockey for 20 years now and I don’t think I’ve ever been a part of anything that happened here tonight.
“You don’t want to be in this situation. You basically embarrassed everyone that played with the Winged Wheel tonight and we have to live with that.”
Detroit is 0-4-3 in their last seven games.
“Honestly, right now, right after the game, I don’t even know what to tell you, to be honest with you,” the Red Wings’ Niklas Kronwall said. “It’s just fuming inside of yourself. In saying that, we can’t just sit back and feel sorry for ourselves. It doesn’t work like that.
“We keep talking about [how] hard work is going to get you out of it. Today, it wasn’t hard work. It was embarrassing.”

Neither Wings goalie had a fun time in net.
Petr Mrazek got the start and yielded five goals on 25 shots; he was given the hook midway through the second period.
Jimmy Howard relieved Mrazek and promptly gave up five goals on nine shots.
“Today was just embarrassing. I don’t even know what word to describe it [with], really. From the top guy to the last guy, not only did we embarrass ourselves, but we embarrassed our organization,” Detroit’s Niklas Kronwall said after the rout.
