In Montreal, the Canadiens won, and won with a vengeance on Saturday night.
Dylan Larkin opened the scoring to give the Detroit Red Wings a 1-0 lead.
That was it for Detroit as the Habs reeled off six unanswered goals in a 6-1 win, their first of the season.
“Nobody wants to have that feeling again,” Montreal head coach Dominique Ducharme said. “That was a long 10 days.”
Jake Allen made 26 saves in the win.
Mathieu Perreault scored a hat trick for Montreal.
“My wife was here and I had some friends in the building as well, and when [the crowd] chanted my name, I had chills in my back,” Perreault, said. “It was one of the most special moments that you just remember for the rest of your life.”
Christian Dvorak and Ben Chiarot added single markers and two points each in the win.l
“We knew he was going to be out, and he’s out,” Detroit head coach Jeff Blashill said. “We had 20 dressed good enough to win the hockey game. We’ve got to execute better.”
Mike Hoffman scored for the Canadiens to give them a 2-1 lead.
“Obviously, it’s great to get the first one out of the way,” Hoffman said. “Our power play hasn’t been what we wanted it to be so far (2-for-23), so it was nice to get one for that department.”
Thomas Greiss made 12 saves before getting the hook the middle frame.
“We were giving them some pretty good looks,” the Red Wings’ Marc Staal said. “I mean, one of them goes off my skate and in. The other ones are just 2-on-1s and 3-on-2s, so [Greiss is] not to blame. We weren’t giving him enough support and just making it easy on them. They were really hard on him.”
Alex Nedeljkovic made six saves in a mop up role.
