Montreal edge Blackhawks, 3-2, on late goal

The Chicago Blackhawks lost their seventh straight game Sunday night.  But at least this time they looked like a team invested in the game.

Tomas Tatar broke a 2-2 tie with 1:17 left in regulation to give the visiting Montreal Canadiens a 3-2 win.

Carey Price made 37 saves in the win, the Habs’ third straight.

“I think the key to our two points tonight was Carey Price,” forward Andrew Shaw said. “He was absolutely outstanding. The penalty kill was great. We shot ourselves in the foot eight times, eight power plays. … There was a double minor in there, I think they had a six-minute power play straight, so hats off to our D, our (penalty) killers, and obviously our goalie.”

The Hawks rallied back from an early 2-0 deficit on two goals from Patrick Kane.

“It’s always nice to produce,” Kane said. “It’s been awhile for me here lately. I could kind of feel it coming the last couple games. It’s nice to get on the score sheet, would’ve been nice to get another one there in the third or get something, especially on the power play. But it didn’t happen.”

Chicago dropped to 9-17-5, bot a record one would have foreseen ahead of the season.

Max Domi and Shea Weber scored in the first period to give the Habs the early lead; Chicago has made an ugly habit of surrendering the first goal of a game (now 10 straight).

“It’s just, like, we talk about it, and it’s very, very frustrating, especially when it keeps happening,” Kane said. “I’m sure we’ll keep addressing it, keep trying to figure it out, keep trying to go [new] ways about it, maybe switch things up, I don’t know. It’s frustrating that it keeps happening.”

The Blackhawks had their chances in the third period but were scoreless in five power play chances.

“It’s disappointing. You’d love to see a puck to go in. I think we did enough, probably. We would’ve liked to have gotten a few pucks through, and there were some rebounds lying around, we just couldn’t finish. Unfortunate to give up the goal at the end. That really, really gives it a negative tinge,” Chicago head coach Jeremy Colliton said.
