Monsters win AHL Calder Cup

CLEVELAND – The Lake Erie Monsters rolled through the American Hockey League post season this year.

They posted an astounding 16-2 record en route to the 2016 Calder Cup Championship.Lake Erie Monsters logo

Oliver Bjorkstrand scored with 1.9 seconds left in the first overtime to defeat the Hershey Bears, 1-0, to capture the Cup.

Bjorkstrand was awarded the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy as the MVP in the Calder Cup Playoffs

Anton Forsberg posted 23 saves in the win and ended the playoffs with a 9-0 record.

Nearly 20,000 fans witnessed the hoisting of the Calder Cup on Saturday night.  It was the largest crowd in Monsters franchise history and the second largest in AHL history.

The championship is the first for hockey club in Cleveland since 1964 when the Cleveland Barons won.
