Monsters spook Wild in 7-3 win

DES MOINES, IA – The Iowa Wild (2-4-0-0, 4 points) was defeated by the Cleveland Monsters (3-2-0-0, 6 points) 7-3 on Tuesday night at Wells Fargo Arena. Cleveland forward Markus Hannikainen registered a hat trick to help lead his club to a road win. In all, five Monsters picked up a multi-point game, including Daniel Zaar, who had a goal 2246_cleveland_monsters-primary-2017and an assist. Monsters goalie Anton Forsberg (3-1-0) made 34 saves in the win. Wild forward Jordan Schroeder scored a goal and added two assists for three points in the defeat. Iowa goalie Alex Stalock (1-4-0) was pulled after giving up five goals on 22 shots and 23:18 of work. Forwards Tyler Graovac and Pat Cannone also scored in the Iowa set back. Iowa welcomes Milwaukee for a 7 PM faceoff on Friday.

Cleveland jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period, with the first goal coming off the stick of Daniel Zaar at 7:10 of the opening period. Justin Scott and Blake Siebenaler helped set up Zaar’s second goal of the year for the 1-0 lead. The Monsters made it 2-0 at 11:26 of the first period after Markus Hannikainen scored his first goal of the year. TJ Tynan and Cody Goloubef each had the assist on the tally. Cleveland added a shorthanded goal prior to the end of the first period. Forward Jordan Maletta’s first goal of the season made it a 3-0 game at 18:46. Maletta’s shorthanded goal was set up by Zaar.

Iowa got on the scoreboard at 1:12 of the second period after Jordan Schroeder scored his first goal of the season. Defenseman Mike Weber set up the breakaway with a snap pass in the neutral zone, springing Schroeder for the goal and a 3-1 deficit. The Monsters countered with three straight tallies, starting with Dante Salituro at 2:41. Jamie Sifers and Joe Pendenza each had the assist on Salituro’s first goal of the year for the 4-1 lead. Markus Hannikainen scored the next two goals, striking at 3:18 for the 5-1 lead and again at 5:57 to complete his hat trick. Alex Stalock was pulled after Hannikainen’s second goal of the game at 3:18 of the middle period, as Steve Michalek entered the game in his place. Siebenaler had the lone assist on Hannilainen’s third goal of the night and a 6-1 Cleveland lead. Iowa cut the Cleveland lead to 6-2 at 11:39, capitalizing for a power-play goal by Tyler Graovac. Defenseman Mike Reilly and Schroeder each had a hand in Graovac’s first goal of the year, a rebound tally past Anton Forsberg. The Wild cut the Monsters lead in half at 6-3, scoring at19:08 for the team’s second power-play goal of the night for the 6-3. Forward Pat Cannone ripped a slap shot from the right-wing circle, beating a screened Forsberg for his first goal of the year.  Schroeder and Christoph Bertschy each had an assist on the tally, as Iowa went to the locker room down three goals.

Defenseman Dean Kukan scored an empty-net goal for the Monsters at 14:20 of the third period. Kukan’s first goal of the year was assisted by Pendenza for the 7-3 final score.
