Moncton ends PEI’s playoff run

 QUEBEC CITY. P.Q. — By winning game five 4- 3 in their own building, the Moncton Wildcats made sure that they will earn the right to play in the second round of the QMJHL playoffs by eliminating the PEI Rocket. Moncton began the game showing that their opponent would be tough one. The Wildcats put 17 shots against PEI goaltender Bobby Nadeau, who answered the charge by being perfect. PEI opened the scoring with seven seconds remaining in the opening period when Chris Doyle beat Nicola Riopel (19:52) for a 1-0 lead. Moncton came back in the middle frame scoring two goals in 54 seconds, taking the lead for the first time in the game 2-1. Ted Stephens (12:38) and Scott Brannon (13:38) scored for Moncton, but not before Prince Edward Island came back with Brandon Street’s goal (14:28) to tie the game before the siren went on to announce the end of the second period. The Wildcats scored their two goals on 25 shots. PEI beat Riopel once on four shots. The Wildcats took the leads by two thanks to goals scored by Matt Brown (6:32) and Ted Stephens, his second of the game at 8:39 on the power play when PEI left winger Jordan Escott was sent to the box at 8:19. With Moncton left winger Pierre-Marc Lessard in the penalty box for two minutes the Rocket scored what became their last goal in the game, and in their 2008-09 season when Jean-Philippe Mathieu scored PEI’s third goals of the game at 13:12. Total shots on net: PEI Rocket 24, Moncton Wildcats 49. Power play: PEI 1 for 2, Moncton 1 for 4. Series results. Drummondville is still awaiting their next opponent which will either be the Montreal Junior or the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies.
