MANCHESTER, NH – The Manchester Monarchs scored twice in the second period and came out with a 2-1 win over the Jacksonville Icemen on Friday night at the SNHU Arena.
The Monarchs (6-3-0-1) took their first-ever meeting against the Icemen (1-5-1-0), and outshot their counterparts from Jacksonville, 40-34.
After a scoreless first period, Manchester got on the board when Jonathan Racine netted hisfirst goal of the season at 7:17 of the middle frame. Along the boards, Joel Lowry found David Kolomatis at the point, where he slid the puck along the blue line to Racine. Racine then sent a wrist shot past the left shoulder of Icemen goaltender Jamie Phillips to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead.
The Icemen tied the game when Alexandre Goulet scored at 14:25 of the second period. Dylan Blujus sent a shot on goal from the right point, but the puck made its way to the left dot. Emerson Clark grabbed the puck and fed Goulet in the slot, where he stuffed the puck past Monarchs goaltender Evan Cowley, for his sixth goal of the season.
The Monarchs took the lead for good when Rob Hamilton scored a power-play goal at 17:29 of the second period to make the game 2-1. Matt Leitner found Hamilton at the right point where he fired a shot that beat Phillips through the five-hole for his second goal of the season.
The Monarchs travel to Worcester for the first of a home-and-home series with the Worcester Railers on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. at the DCU Center.
Sunday, Nov. 12 at 3 p.m., the Monarchs will welcome Boston Bruins legendary anthem singer, Rene Rancourt, to SNHU Arena to perform the Canadian and American national anthems prior to puck drop.
Notes: Evan Cowley stopped Elgin Pearce on a penalty shot at 15:24 of the second period… The Monarchs improved their overall record of wins when leading after two periods to 5-0-1-1… David Kolomatis scored the 200th point of his North American career… Jonathan Racine dropped the gloves with Emerson Clark at 19:49 of the second period… Jacksonville went 0-for-5 on the power play.
