INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – The Missouri Mavericks maintained their perfect home record on Friday night with a 5-2 victory over the visiting Cincinnati Cyclones. The Mavericks own a flawless 9-0-0-0 record at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena this season.
The win is the Mavericks first over the Cyclones in franchise history. The two teams will square off once more this season tomorrow evening at 7:05p.m. to complete their short two-game series.
Rookie center Tanner Fritz scored first for the Mavericks, tipping the puck past net-minder Brandon Whitney mid-way through the opening frame at 10:49. Teammates Pat Cullity and David deKastrozza assisted on the play. Defenseman Bryce Aneloski followed up Fritz’s goal with his own tally at 16:52 with the help ofSebastien Sylvestre and Pat Cullity.
The sold out crowd at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena erupted in cheers once more when rookie forward Colin Markison fit one final tally into the first frame with just 17 seconds remaining on the clock. Tanner Fritz andKyle Burroughs rounded out the all-rookie goal with the helpers.
Andrew Courtney boosted the Mavs leads up 4-0 ahead of the Cyclones at 9:28 of the second period, aided by Carter Verhaeghe and Rocco Carzo on a Missouri man-advantage. The Cyclones answered back with two power-play goals to cut into the Mavs strong lead. The first power-play goal was scored by Andrew Yogan at 16:31 followed by a second from former Mav, Jack Downing, just thirty-eight seconds later.
While the Mavs still commanded the scoreboard where it counted, Cincinnati took charge of puck possession through the remainder of the game, coming back from trailing 16-7 in shots on goal after the first period, to finishing the game with a one-shot lead, 27-26.
Rookie Reed Seckel, who was acquired by the Mavericks on Tuesday afternoon from the Indy Fuel, scored the lone goal of the third period. Seckel’s first professional goal was notched 3:36 into the third frame with the help of Tyler Barnes and Carter Verhaeghe.
Missouri kept their 5-2 lead through the remainder of regulation, claiming their ninth straight win at home this season. Josh Robinson made 25 saves through 59:54 between the pipes for the Mavs. Robinson maintains his own perfect 12-0-0-0 record with the win.
The Mavs continue their home stand tomorrow night at 7:05p.m. with another bought against the Cyclones during their third annual Star Wars Night. Over twenty costumed characters from the movie franchise will be in attendance on Saturday night, walking the concourse pre-game and participating in promotions and contests throughout the event. Saturday is also Union Night, presented by Boyd Kenter Thomas & Parrish, LLC. The first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive a Mavs ice scraper.
Missouri caps off their weekend against the Quad City Mallards at 4:05p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 20th. The first 1,500 fans in attendance (age 15 & older) will receive an adult jersey giveaway.
