INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – The Missouri Mavericks bested the Quad City Mallards 4-2 at home on Sunday evening, moving their perfect home record to 11-0-0-0 at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena this season. The Sunday night victory is the Mavs’ third win of the weekend.
Mavericks defenseman, C.J. Ludwig scored the first goal of the game, lighting the lamp early at 3:23 with the help of Carter Verhaeghe and Rocco Carzo. The Mavericks kept majority of the action down in the Quad City end of the ice, outshooting the Mallards 16 to 7 through the first 20 minutes of play. The Mallards took advantage of a power-play situation late in the period to tie the game up 1-1 at 17:45 via defenseman Alex Gudbranson. Sam Warning and Austin Coldwell assisted on the play.
The visiting team took the lead, 2-1, over the Mavs just 1:43 into the second period when Warning scored his own goal with the help of Miles Koules and Olivier Archambault. The Mavericks trailed the Mallards until the 15:16 mark of the period when they found themselves in a short-handed situation and rookie Colin Markison used his impressive speed to race down the ice and create a 1-on-1 situation with net-minder Steve Michalek after forcing a turnover. Markison scored the short-handed goal unassisted to tie the game up, 2-2.
The game was tied 2-2 until there were less than 5 minutes remaining in regulation. Carter Verhaeghe broke the stalemate game with a top-shelf tally off a pass from teammate Tyler Barnes with 4:27 on the clock.
Quad City pulled net-minder Steve Michalek from between the posts with just over a minute left in regulation, and once again the speed of Colin Markison came into play as the rookie notched his second goal of the evening after forcing the puck free and breaking away into the Mallards zone to give the Mavs a 4-2 lead with only 7.7 seconds left in the game.
Mavericks goaltender, Josh Robinson, earned third star of the game, making 28 saves through 58:49 in goal for Missouri on Sunday night, moving his own near-perfect record to 13-0-0-1.
The Missouri Mavericks play their next game on the road against the Allen Americans on Saturday, Dec. 26 before they play their final game of 2015 at home on Thursday, Dec. 31.
