In Ottawa, the Vancouver Canucks nearly pulled off two points in regulation, but needed to wait until extra time for J.T. Miller to score the game-winner, in a 3-2 decision over over the Senators on Monday night.
In his sixth straight start, Thatcher Demko made 44 saves to get the win.
“Well, I’m happy we won the game, but I didn’t think we skated very well, didn’t think we passed the puck very well,” Vancouver head coach Travis Green said. “Our goalie gave us the game.”
Colin White had made the extra session necessary when he tied the game up at 2-2 with just over two minutes left in regulation.
“We were outstanding,” Ottawa head coach D.J. Smith said. “To a man, how hard we played, take the 3-on-3 aside, I don’t know how much harder we can play on a back-to-back. We made plays, we were dangerous, we defended when we had to. We just didn’t come out on the right side of it, but that’s a heck of an effort.”
Josh Norris also scored for the Senators.
Vancouver scored both of its regulation goals in the first with Jayce Hawryluk picking up the first fort a1-0 lead.
“It’s huge. We know we needed these two points big tonight,” Hawryluk said. “Obviously, it wasn’t the way we drew it up, but we came out on top and that’s all that matters.”
Tanner Pearson made it 2-0 with 71 seconds left in the opening frame.
“[Demko is] really good for us. I feel like I say the same thing about him every time,” Miller said. “He’s giving us a chance to win and that’s all you can ask for. He’s a really good goalie and that’s it.”
Joey Daccord made 25 saves in the loss.
“It’s a tough play. You just have to have a short memory when that stuff happens. Just move forward,” White said. “After that, it sparked me a little bit, more intensity. The rest of the game, we played really well. Obviously, I wish I could take that one back, but there’s nothing I can do about it.”
