Annapolis, MD – Opening night at McMullen Ice Center saw the home team United States Naval Academy Midshipmen fall to the #2 ranked Ohio University Bobcats 6-2. The game was tightly contested through the first two periods with the scored tied at two each. The Bobcats pulled away with four unanswered goals in the third period after out shooting the Midshipmen 63-19.
While the first period didn’t have any scoring, it did have a lot of goaltending as Navy’s Luke Markus had to come up with 20 saves. Ohio’s goalie Jimmy Thomas only had to make four saves. The period also saw just three minor penalties.
Navy opened the scoring on just their fifth shot of the game at 4:43 of the second period. John Linenger scored the goal with assists from Joe Kelly and Matthew Stamler. Less than three minutes later, Bobcats forward Drew Crandall tied it up with assists from Kyle Craddick and Zach Frank. Nick Grose of Ohio then scored at 10:16 to take the lead with helpers from Garrett Elmore and Bryan Lubin. Navy would then tie the game on the periods only power play at 16:30. Joe Kelly got the goal with assists from Conner Hyden and Matthew Stamler.
Ohio University took over in the third period with four unanswered goals, beginning with Michael Palasics goal just 1:09 into the period. Cody Black and Timmy Thurnau had the assists on the Palasics goal. Gianni Evangelisti was next to score at 6:24 with helpers from Jake Faiella and Tyler Hankins. Shaun Baird tallied the Bobcats fifth goal of the game with Kyle Craddick registering his second assist . Gianni Evangelisti completed the scoring with an empty netter from Hankins and Nick Grose.
The same teams meet again Saturday night in Annapolis. Ohio University returns home on Friday, October 6, for a game against the University of Jamestown, while Navy hosts the University of Delaware, also on Friday.
