Midshipmen down Tigers, 6-2

Annaplis, MD. The Naval Academy Midshipmen started off Veteran’s Day weekend with a victory over the Rochester Institute of Techonology Tigers on Friday evening at McMulen Ice Arena by a score of 6-2.

In a relatively quiet first period, Navy’s Matthew Stamler scored the only goal at 5:45, with assists coming from Tyler Haigh and Michael Burkard. RIT managed just six shots on goal to Navy’s 16, while taking three minor penalties to Navy’s one minor penalty.

Derek Struwing scored early for RIT just two minutes and 30 seconds into the second period on an even strength goal. Alex Nyzio had the lone assist. Just 27 seconds later, Navy’s John Linenger regained the lead on a feed from Derek Golembrosky and Hyo Jun Baek.  Conner Hyden extended the Navy lead on a short handed goal assisted by John Scaccia and Andrew Douglas. The Tigers  defense and goaltending then came up big while killing off a seven minute penalty, due to a two minute minor, five minute major and game misconduct penalty.

It was Derek Golembrosky scoring at 6:24 of the third on an even strength goal with assists from Ross Hogan and Hyo Jun Baek.  John Wickes of RIT got their second goal of the game at 10:33. Eric Andolina and Patrick Collins had the assists for the Tigers.  As RIT was celebrating, Navy’s coach Kevin Rooney called a time out to refocus his troops. One minute and eleven seconds later, Navy was back on the board with a goal from Joe Kelly, with helpers from Conner Hyden and Alexander Vandenberg. It was Vandenberg closing out the games scoring at 17:11 on a power play goal with an assist from John Linenger. Navy put 18 shots on goal in the third period while RIT fired 12 shots on net. RIT’s goalie Nicholas Amato made 40 saves on 46 shots, while Navy’s Luke Markus saved 23 of 25 shots.

The two teams meet again Saturday night in Annapolis. After the weekend, RIT heads back north for a game at Northease Collegiate Hockey League foe University at Buffalo before heading home for a game against St John Fisher College. RIT currently leads the NECHL standings.

Navy continues their home stand next weekend versus Eastern Collegiate Hockey Association foes Drexel on Friday, November 17 and Villanova on Friday the 18th. Navy is in second place in the ECHA.
