Midshipmen Defeat Owls in Conference Game

Annapolis, MD- The Navy Midshipmen had a break out second period on Friday night to defeat the Temple Owls on home ice. Temple’s Charles Ghiazza opened the scoring when Navy got into penalty trouble and were two men down. Brendan Ondick and Shawn Fowler had assists on the first goal at 4:32.

Less than two minutes later, at 6:06, Luke Brzozowski gave Temple a two goal lead on a feed from Jack Pearce.  Navy finally got on the scoreboard at 18:49 on a goal by Matthew Stamler, assisted by Conner Hyden and Michael Burkard. Navy outshot Temple 18 – 8 in the first, while taking four penalties, to Temple’s two.

Temple regained a two goal advantage at 2:08 of the second, when John Kumpf was assisted by Pearce and Brzozowski. Just over ten minutes later, Navy began to dominate the game.

At 12:32 Conner Hyden scored, with assists going to Alexander Vandenberg and Michael Burkard. Twenty seconds later, Derek Golembrosky scored on assists from John Linenger and Hyo Jun Baek. Alexander Vandenberg put Navy up for a lead that they would not relinquish at 15:59. Joe Kelly had the primary assist with Conner Hyden picking up his third point of the game on the secondary assist.

John Linenger closed the scoring in the period at 18:49 with helpers from  Joe Kelly and Hyo Jun Baek. Navy continued their shot dominance by putting 32 shots on Temple’s Benjamin Auerbach, while Navy’s Luke Markus only faced six shots. Also of note, the second period was penalty free.

The Owl’s could have folded when they were called for a penalty at 4:33 of the third, but Brendan Ondick stripped Navy of the puck and scored a short handed goal at 6:08. Luke Turk scored at 11:45 with assists going to John Scaccia and Ross Hogan.

Navy then had to kill off a two minute penalty at 15:09 to hold on to the lead. Joe Kelly scored the final Navy goal of the game at 19:41 as Temple’s goalie had vacated the net for an extra attacker. The Owl’s Auerbach ended the game making 58 saves on 65 shots, while Navy’s Markus made 20 saves on 24 shots.

Temple won’t return to the ice until Friday, Novemeber 10, when they take on Cornell for the first of three games in three days.

Navy is back in action on Saturday night for the second game of a six game homestand over the next three weekends. The Saturday game is another conference game versus Lehigh University.
