Michigan Cruises to CCHA Title

PAPILLION, NEBRASKA – The University of Michigan won the CCHA Title Saturday evening defeating the Northern Michigan Wildcats 2-1 in Detroit, Michigan at Joe Louis Arena.  The seventh seeded Wolverines fought an uphill battle throughout the playoffs first defeating Lake Superior State in two games in Ann Arbor before traveling to East Lansing for a best of three series against in state rival Michigan State.  The Spartans would fall to Michigan earning the Wolverines a date with the top ranked Miami RedHawks.  Michigan would blow through Miami to set up their matchup in the championship game against the University of Northern Michigan.

Schedule Results: March 19, 2010 Northern Michigan verse Ferris State Greger Hansen scored the game winning goal a minute into the overtime period to send the Northern Michigan University Wildcats into the conference championship game.  Northern Michigan’s Brian Stewart made 35 saves and Ray Kaunisto had three points in the winning effort.
Michigan verse Miami The Michigan Wolverines pounded the Miami RedHawks for 28 shots on goal throughout the game leading to three goals in the third period.  Michigan’s top line of Carl Hagelin, Matt Rust, and Kevin Lynch had three points apiece to the lead the Wolverines.  Shawn Hunwick made 20 saves for his sixth win this season in net for the Michigan Wolverines.
March 20, 2010 Ferris State verse Miami (Consolation Game) Jarod Palmer and Steve Mason scored a goal apiece for the RedHawks to solidify third place in the CCHA tournament.  Jarod Palmer’s game winner came with a little over four minutes remaining in the third period to break the one all tie.  Connor Knapp made 12 saves as Miami tightened down the screws one night after allowing the Michigan Wolverines to score five goals.  Ferris State finishes the tournament in fourth place with the loss.
Michigan verse Northern Michigan (Championship Game) Louie Caporusso led the University of Michigan to the CCHA Title earning the Wolverines an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.  Caporusso scored twice this evening, once in the second period and once more in the third period.  Michigan’s playoff phenom Shawn Hunwick stopped 17 shots on goal earning his seventh win this season.
