Mettam gets shutout win over MK Thunder

BASINGSTOKE UK: Alex Mettam became only third player in the Bison’s history to record a shut-out both for and against the Herd, as he joining Dean Skinns and Curtis Cruickshank in achieving this.

Back in October 2011, the British goalie shut-out the Bison, while playing for the Milton Keynes Lightning turning away 38 shots in a 1-0 in Basingstoke.

Turn the clock on almost exactly seven years and Mettam once more recorded a shut-out with 14 stops, ironically blanking the MK Thunder.

His saves allowed the Bison to record a 5-0 victory, which at the time moved them up to fourth in the standings.

The game against MK was won thanks to four first period strikes.

Liam Morris got the first thanks to some solo magic and then Adam Jones netted the second, which was his first ever Bison goal.

Richard Bordowski scored number three after a great give and go pass from Russ Cowley and Jones with his second of the night against on the powerplay wrapped up the first period scoring.

The visitor’s cause was not helped, when import forward Tomas Rubes was dismissed for a check to the head before the first interval.

The second period, saw the home side dominate th shot count 11-1, but were unable to find a way past Basingstoke-born Jordan Lawday.

The final 20 minutes saw then score one more as the Herd’s top British goal getter netted.

“This was not one of best performances tonight, but of course I am happy with the two points. I was very pleased to see Mettsy get a shut-out,” said Bison player/coach Ashley Tait.

This weekend, the Herd face teams from either end of the league with a visit from bottom side Invicta on Saturday, followed by a trip the early leaders Bracknell on Sunday.

The Bison have already beaten Invicta in their own barn this season and will be hoping to complete the double over them.

On Sunday, a large number of Bison fans are expected to make the trip to Bracknell as the Herd face a side with no less than seven of Basingstoke’s treble winning side icing for them, as well as former head coach Doug Sheppard behind the bench.

The Herd are hopeful of having defenceman Chris Cooke back in their line-up, but netminder Dan Weller-Evans is a few weeks away from being back on the ice.
