CHICAGO – The United States Hockey League announced the CCM Hockey player awards for the 23rd week of the 2014-15 USHL regular season.
Winners include Josh Melnick of the Youngstown Phantoms, named CCM Forward of the Week; Corey Schueneman of the Des Moines Buccaneers, named CCM Defenseman of the Week; and Kris Oldham of the Omaha Lancers, selected as CCM Goaltender of the Week.
Josh Melnick, F, Youngstown Phantoms: The forward recorded six points (3g, 3a) and a plus-six rating to lead the Phantoms to a pair of victories against the Fargo Force and extend their win streak to 10 games. He dished out an assist in Friday’s 3-2 shootout victory before having a USHL career high five-point night (3g, 2a) in Saturday’s 7-1 win. The 19-year-old scored three consecutive goals, including a shorthanded tally, in a span of 12:08 of game action to record the natural hat trick. It was the first multi-goal game of his USHL career that has spanned 99 games. Melnick is riding an eight-game point streak (3g, 14a) and is now tied for fifth in USHL scoring with 50 points (11g, 39a) while leading the League in assists (39). The Annandale, New Jersey native is a product of Delbarton School and is committed to play college hockey at Princeton University.
Corey Schueneman, D, Des Moines Buccaneers: The defenseman recorded three points (2g, 1a) and a plus-three rating as the Buccaneers split a two-game weekend. He scored on the power play in Friday’s 5-2 victory over the Lincoln Stars. The 19-year-old then had two points (1g, 1a) in Saturday’s 4-3 loss to the Omaha Lancers, which included his fourth goal in a span of five games. Schueneman leads all USHL defensemen in scoring with 39 points (14g, 25a) through 45 games, and he leads blueliners in goals (14) and power play goals (6). The Milford, Michigan native will now return to his home state after being acquired in a USHL trade deadline day deal with the Muskegon Lumberjacks. The product of the Little Caesars youth hockey program will play college hockey at Western Michigan University beginning next season.
Kris Oldham, G, Omaha Lancers: Over a three-game span, the 17-year-old goaltender posted a 1.45 goals-against-average and .940 save percentage in helping the Lancers extend their win streak to six straight contests. He turned aside 22 shots in Friday’s 4-2 win over the Madison Capitols. Oldham then entered Saturday’s game at the beginning of the second period with his team trailing 2-0 and went on to stop 13 of 14 shots he faced to earn the 4-3 victory over Des Moines. He finished off the weekend with a 28-save effort, plus stopped 2-of-3 in the shootout, in Sunday’s 2-1 shootout win against the Waterloo Black Hawks. It is the second straight week, and fourth time overall, that the Anchorage, Alaska native has captured USHL weekly honors. He played for the Alaska All Stars youth program and Kenai River (NAHL) prior to his time in the USHL. Oldham is committed to play college hockey at the University of Nebraska-Omaha.
