MELBOURNE, Australia – The Gold Medal game was to be decided between the Melbourne Ice and the Sydney Sirens. The Melbourne Ice have won the last 3 years and are trying to win the 4th year in a row the Joan McKowan Trophy and will the Sydney Sirens upset the Melbourne Ice reign at the top. 
The two teams came out firing and it was the Melbourne Ice to score first and then the Sydney Sirens responded. The final continued at a cracking pace with Melbourne Ice taking the lead and into the second period it was Melbourne Ice 4 to Sydney Sirens 3.
In the third period, both teams lifted and the lead also changed with the Sirens taking the lead 6-5 with less than five minutes to go before the end of the third period. Melbourne Ice managed to even up the score to six-all at the end of the period.
With the score at six-all, the game was going to five-minute overtime.
The game continued at the high pace that the game was set at, and it was still 6 all at the end of extra time.
To decide the game it went to a shoot out and with Melbourne Ice shooting first and missing and this was the same with Sydney.
Melbourne Ice then scored on the next two penalty shots, the Sydney Sirens tried but the Melbourne Ice goalie managed to save the next shot and it took a couple of moments for the goalie to realize that the game was over.
Melbourne Ice are the Champions of the Joan McKowan Trophy for the fourth year in a row.
It was one of the best finals to be played by the Melbourne Ice and the Sydney Sirens.
