McElhinney, Canes shut out Stars

In Dallas on Saturday night, the visiting Carolina Hurricanes posted a 3-0 shut out win over the Stars behind Curtis McElhinney, who made 24 saves.

Petr Mrazek accomplished the same feat, same score earlier in the week.

“I was really proud of them today,” Canes head coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “That was a great game, really, from start to finish. Guys dug in. Again, everybody’s contributing in some form or fashion right now.”

The Hurricanes are now a gaudy 33-23-6 with the win.

“This has been about as good as it gets right now,” McElhinney said. “It’s been a lot of fun playing the second half here, especially after the break.”

Lucas Wallmark, Justin Faulk and Jordan Martinook were the goal scorers for Carolina.

The Stars dropped to 30-26-5 with the loss.

“I think we’re trying, but we’re not playing smart,” Stars defenseman John Klingberg said. “We gave up two goals, and then we’re chasing too much, not staying with our system and turning too many pucks over. It could have been 5-0 and, obviously, we’re not that dangerous offensively either.”

Ben Bishop made 28 saves in the loss.

“Their puck pressure was really, really good. That’s why we weren’t able to generate anything,” Stars coach Jim Montgomery. “But when you’re not skating, you’re not making passes tape to tape, any adjustments you make — we adjusted on the power play to a different power-play set and still couldn’t make two passes in a row — it even gets tougher when you’re on top of your game 5-on-5.”
