Historic it may be but it was hardly surprising today when the Edmonton Oilers extended Connor McDavid’s contract for eight years.

The deal begins with the 2018-19 NHL season and is worth $12.5 million annually.
Reportedly, $86 million is guaranteed through signing bonuses.
“Building a team to win the Stanley Cup was a constant point of discussion,” Oilers general manager Peter Chiarelli said on ESPN.com.
The annualized salary is a new high for the NHL and surpasses the contracts of Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews in Chicago and Carey Price in Montreal.
“I want to win here,” McDavid said. “This is a city that has such a rich history. It’s important we bring that back. We got a taste of that last season. … Honestly, it’s such an honor to be here and to wear that Oilers jersey for the next nine years of my life.”
The total $100 million value is below several other players but the Oilers spent what they could to lock down McDavid and his talents.
“Connor was emphatic, as was I, about keeping this team competitive,” Chiarelli said on the Edmonton Journal web site..
“He wants us to ice a winning team, as we all do, as the fans of Edmonton do.”
