McDavid throttles Avs

In Edmonton, Connor McDavid scored a hat trick and added three assists as he had a hand in all six goals for the Oilers Thursday in their 6-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche.

“You have nights where you feel good, and then not so good,” McDavid said. “Tonight, I definitely felt good. It’s nice to get some early and keep it rolling.”

Leon Draisaitl had five assists in the win.

“It’s fun, it’s real fun to play with Leo,” McDavid said. “We’ve been playing together for a long time now. So these nights are fun to do it together.”

Mike Smith made 31 saves in the win.

Andre Burakovsky scored both of the Avs goals.

“I think their best players had a night tonight, and I didn’t think we were very good, not tight enough with our checking, and we just didn’t seem to have the drive we needed to win this one,” Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said. “Too many penalties for us, and their power play had a night, and their special teams were really good, and ours weren’t.”

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins struck for two goals for the Oilers.

“Our power play is clicking, and when it’s clicking, it’s going in,” Edmonton coach Dave Tippett said. “We capitalized on some chances. Those guys, if they get chances, they capitalize. The power play was good. I thought the first period was probably our best period, just moving the puck, and we were hungry on it, built a lead, and then pushed it right till the end, which was good.”

Zack Kassian had a single marker in the win.

Adam Werner got his first NHL start and yielded five goals and made 13 saves; he got the hook near the midway point of the second period.

Antoine Bibeau made nine saves in relief in his first NHL action.

“We had some looks that we couldn’t take advantage off,” Burakovsky said. “I think overall, we have to be better. We talked about it before the game, that we have to be hard on those top six [guys] on the other team, and I think we showed too much respect or whatever.”
