McDavid leads Oilers past Detroit, 4-3

In Edmonton, Cam Talbot made 22 stops to help the Oilers edge the Detroit Red Wings, 4-3.

For the 22nd time this season Connor McDavid had a multi-point game with a goal and two points.

“They played [Friday] night [a 3-2 overtime loss at the Calgary Flames] and may have been a bit tired,” McDavid said. “It was definitely not a perfect game. We made some mistakes and it almost cost us, but we found a way to win.”

Zack Kassian, Jordan Eberle and Patrick Maroon added goals for the Oilers as the Edmonton improved to 35-22-8.

“There are a couple of teams in the League that I know their character and leadership,” Oilers head coach Todd McLellan said. “I’m glad we’re done with them. It was a tough night, not easy by any means.”

Detroit got goals from Anthony Mantha, Darren Helm and Dylan Larkin as the Red Wings dropped to 25-27-11.

“I feel it’s the story of our season,” Helm said. “We’ve been close, we’ve had opportunities, we just haven’t been able to score goals in a timely fashion. I think, for the most part, our effort has been there, we just haven’t found ways to put pucks in the net.”

The loss was another nail in the Red Wings’ effort to maintain their playoff run of 25 seasons.

“It’s tough to play from behind against this team,” Detroit’s Henrik Zetterberg said. “They’re really skilled when they get their odd-man rushes. We were behind from the beginning, but Petr came up with some huge saves tonight.”

Petr Mrazek made 34 saves in taking the loss for the Wings.

“We have to find a way to get out and not only weather the storm, but bring some energy and play a good road first period and get on the board first,” Larkin said.
