On Sunday, December 11th the Petes finished up their two-in-two road trip in Sarnia for an afternoon meeting with the Sarnia Sting. The Petes would be desperate to end their five game losing streak after falling to London at Budweiser Gardens the night before. There would be a couple of local connections in the game as Peterborough natives Nolan Burke and Porter Martone would both be in the lineup for the Sting.
The first period started out in a way that has been all too familiar for the Petes as of late. Just 2:55 into the game Zach Filak picked up a rebound and beat Michael Simpson on a wrap-around to give Sarnia a 1-0 lead. The Petes refused to be down for too long and would draw even just 2:39 after Sarnia’s goal. Jax Dubois picked up a rebound and beat Sting goalie Nicholas Surzycia to tie the game up at one a piece. Sam McCue registered the primary assist on the goal for his first career OHL point. The Petes would control the play for the remainder of the period but despite a couple big chances, they would be unable to take the lead. The game would stay tied 1-1 heading into the break with Peterborough leading in shots 11-4.
The Petes continued to control the game into the second period. After a Jonathan Melee slashing penalty, the Petes would go down a man and have to battle off a Sting powerplay. The Petes penalty kill was up to the task and late in the PK, Tucker Robertson would take advantage of a giveaway at the Petes blueline and rip his 13th goal of the season shorthanded to give the Petes their first lead in five games. The goal was Tucker’s first shorthanded goal of the season after leading the OHL in that category last season. Four minutes later, Nick Lardis would bury a Jax Dubois rebound for his 12th goal of the season to extend the Petes lead to 3-1.
The Petes penalty kill unit would be the stars of the third period, killing multiple Sting powerplays to hold the lead. Halfway through the period Sahil Panwar, fresh out of the penalty box, would find Chase Stillman who would stay hot and extend the Petes lead to 4-1. The goal was Stillman’s fourth in his last three games. The Petes would hold on to the lead and snap their five game losing streak with a 4-1 win on the road.
Sahil Panwar led the way for the Petes with two assists. Jax Dubois, Tucker Robertson, Nick Lardis, and Chase Stillman each scored a goal in the win. Sam McCue recorded his first career OHL point with an assist and Konnor Smith added a helper as well. Michael Simpson stopped 18/19 for his 11th win of the year.
The Petes next game is Front Line and Healthcare Workers Night when they host the Hamilton Bulldogs at the PMC on Thursday, December 15th. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 PM. To buy tickets, click here.
