MOLINE, Ill. – The Missouri Mavericks took their Wednesday night matchup with the Quad City Mallards to an overtime decision after sixty (60) minutes of hockey left the two teams knotted at 3-3. Mavs leading goal-scorer, Jesse Root, notched an early game-tying goal in the first period before later securing the win, 4-3, for Missouri only thirty-seven (37) seconds into overtime.
Josh Robinson, who was announced as the Warrior Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Month for October earlier in the day, made twenty-seven (27) saves through sixty 60:37 minutes between the pipes for the Mavericks.
The Mallards scored an early goal on a man-advantage when Olivier Archambault bested Robinson with the help of Guillaume Gelinas at 3:29, but it did not take long for Mavericks’ Jesse Root to notch the equalizer with his sixth goal of the season. Root lit the lamp just thirty-one seconds after Archambault’s goal, assisted by Tyler Barnes.
Quad City regained the lead at 16:10 when Zach Pochiro scored with the aid of Tanner Eberle. The Mallards held the 2-1 advantage through the rest of the opening period.
The Mavericks dominated the second period in Moline, IL, outshooting the Mallards 15-9. Tyler Barnes, who was announced as the Sher-Wood Hockey ECHL Player of the Week yesterday afternoon, evened things out on the scoreboard for the Mavs with a power-play goal late in the frame at 17:33. Kellen Jones and Bryce Aneloski were credited with assists on the play. Continuing the Mavs aggressive drive to the net, Jones took advantage of another power-play opportunity to take the lead for Missouri in the final seconds of the period at 19:59. Root and Barnes assisted on the Mavericks second power-play goal of the night.
The Mavs maintained their lead past the mid-point of the third period, until Jake Baker, with the help of Pochiro and Vladimir Nikiforov tied thing up again at 13:50 on the Mallards fifth power-play opportunity of the game.
Both teams remained knotted at 3-3 through the remainder of regulation hockey, forcing the game decision to overtime play.
Just thirty-seven seconds into the extra five-minute period of three-on-three hockey, Jesse Root scored the game-winning goal for Missouri, assisted by Kellen Jones, securing the second point for the Mavericks in their first contest of the week.
The Mavericks play their next game at home on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 7:05p.m. (CT) when they play host to the Wichita Thunder at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena. The Mavs annual Adopt-A-Mav auction is scheduled to take place in sections 101 and 102 directly following the game.
