INDEPENDENCE, MO – The Kansas City Mavericks (14-5-1-1) topped the Allen Americans (6-18-0-2) in a thriller, a back-and-forth contest that ended with the home side on top 4-3.
Here are tonight’s Postgame Snapshots.
Bob and Weave:Â Saturday’s contest was a hard-fought contest, power punch and counter punch that carried late into the game. The Mavericks built an early 2-0 lead that the team took into the final frame, but that’s when Allen came alive with three goals in a span of 2:10 to silence the crowd and jump on top 3-2. Kansas City countered with two goals of its own in just 33 seconds, the first coming from Rocco Carzo and the game-winner from Cliff Watson in the 4-3 win.
Secondary Scoring: Defenseman Willie Raskob entered this weekend’s series with Allen without a goal on the year. Cliff Watson came in with two. Against Allen, each blue-liner scored in each game – Watson finishing the weekend with three goals and tonight’s game-winner and Raskob lighting the lamp twice. Adding scoring from defensemen to a team with an already dangerous and deep corps of forwards is something to watch as the season creeps toward the playoff push, an encouraging development for KC.
Unprecedented:Â Kansas City is now 6-0 against Allen on the year and has won seven in a row against the Americans, the club’s longest-ever win streak against Allen. More impressive still is the fact that until tonight’s game, none of the contests this season had even been close. A tight game is a good test for a team that wants to prove itself as a winner, though, and the Mavericks passed today’s test.
Still Perfect:With tonight’s 4-3 win the Mavericks remain perfect on the year when leading into the locker room at either intermission, now 4-0 after one and 10-0 when leading after two periods of play. The club did let a third-period lead slip today, but it’s a trend that bodes well for this team as it is able to jump on top and maintain the upper hand.
The Mavericks will hit the road for three games at Idaho next week and will return home December 21st for a game against the Tulsa Oilers.
