INDEPENDENCE, MO — The Missouri Mavericks downed the Wichita Thunder, 3-2, in overtime in front of a capacity crowd Saturday night.
The Thunder struck early in the first period as Macoy Erkamps scored his sixth goal of the season on the power play at 7:36. Wichita extended their lead to 2-0 as Louick Marcotte fired one past Josh Robinson off a face-off at 9:44. Eric Scheid got the Mavericks back in the game with an even strength goal at 14:08.Mavericks’ defenseman Matt Finn scored a power play for the second game in a row to knot it up at 2-2, which was the only goal of the second period.
The third period provided exciting end to end action for the sold out crowd at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena, but neither team could break the tie.
Rookie Alex Brooks was the hero once again as he beat Thunder goaltender Drew Owsley over the left shoulder to clinch the victory for the Mavericks. Josh Robinson made 39 saves for his second consecutive victory.
