INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – Mark Cooper scored two power play goals and Jared VanWormer added the third period game winning goal as the Kansas City Mavericks went on to defeat the Tulsa Oilers 3-2 in front of 3,467 fans at the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena on Wednesday night. The win gives the Mavericks a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven ECHL Mountain Division Semi Final Series.
Kansas City was 2-for-3 on the man advantage as they improved to 4-for-11 through three games in the series. Tulsa was 2-for-4 on the power play, and is 3-for-7 in the series. Game three was a rougher affair than the previous two games, as both teams combined for more penalty minutes (32) than the previous two games combined.
Cooper opened the scoring just 1:15 into the game, poking home a rebound past Tulsa’s Devin Williams with Ryan Tesink in the box serving a minor for tripping. VanWormer and Joey Sides picked up the assists on the play. 10-minutes later Cooper struck again on the man advantage, working around a defender and into the Tulsa zone before releasing a shot that hit the net to make it 2-0. Willie Raskob was credited with the helper on the play.
Not to be outdone, the Oilers roared back in the middle frame, scoring two power play goals just under 11-minutes apart.
With Greg Betzold in the box for interference, Stephen Perfetto added his third goal of the playoffs at 4:31 of the second, taking a pass from Steven Kaunisto and blasting past Mason McDonald from inside the right circle. Chris Forney got the secondary assist on the goal.
Eric Drapluk then got the equalizer at 11:29, taking a cross-ice feed from Jared Thomas and sailing a wrist shot past McDonald from the left circle to make it 2-2. Dylan Bredo received an assist on the score.
After 12:06 of scoreless play in the third period, VanWormer nailed the would-be game-winner on assists from Cooper and Nikolas Koberstein. Coming into the play from behind the net, VanWormer moved to the right side of the net and lifted the puck into the net for his second goal of the postseason.
The two teams return to the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena ice for game four on Friday night and game five on Saturday night. Face off for both games is scheduled for 7:05pm.
