PHILADELPHIA – In his first start since early February, Steve Mason made 33 saves for a 4-0 shutout by the Flyers over the Colorado Avalanche Tuesday night.
Wayne Simmonds scored two goals scored twice for the Flyers.
“It’s a good win,” Simmonds said. “Anytime you get two points it’s a good win. We desperately needed two. I thought we played well tonight. We didn’t play perfect by any means, but we played well enough to get the win.”
The Flyers scored three times in the first period to end most of the night’s suspense.
“First period, we come out and weren’t physically ready to go,” Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said. “We were on our heels and we let them come at us. We weren’t prepared for it. Kind of tough luck on a couple of those for Smith, but we brought that on ourselves.”
Jordan Weal picked up his first NHL goal and Jakub Voracek added a marker in the win as the Flyers improved to 29-26-7.
The Avs’ special teams were dismal, going 0-f0r-4 with the man advantage.
“If you don’t score any power-play goals and you get some chances, it hurts,” Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon said.

Jeremy Smith made 22 saves in the loss as the Avs dropped to 17-41-3.
Matt Duchene has been the target of trade rumors for nearly the entire season and the Avs’ record suggests he and more may be gone by 3PM eastern Wednesday.
“It’s hard. It’s just so unpredictable. I think tomorrow I will be relieved either way with what happens. I’m just ready for this to be over and I can move on with my life,” Duchene
