The Toronto Marlies topped the Rochester Americans 3-2 in a shootout on Friday night. This was the sixth and final meeting between the two divisional rivals.
In the first period, it was Sean Malone that got things started for the home side, with a power-play goal just over 10 minutes in. The Marlies got right back to work in the second, as Alex Steeves potted his 18th of the year just 30 seconds in to the middle frame. Malone tallied his second of the night, giving the Amerks’ a 2-1 lead heading into the third.
In the third, Bobby McMann even things up again with a great solo effort. The score remained tied after 60 minutes, so overtime was needed. In the extra frame, both teams exchanged chances, but neither were able to break through.
In the shootout, Joey Anderson scored for the Marlies, while Michael Hutchinson stopped all three Amerks’ shooters earning the win for the visitors. This was Hutchinson’s 100th career AHL victory.
The Marlies are back in action on Saturday when they host the Bridgeport Islanders for their Next Gen Game. Puck drop is at 4:00pm ET.
