CEDAR PARK, Texas — The Texas Stars continued the tight checking style of play they employed in game two, but it wasn’t enough as the Marlies skated to a 2-1 win and take a two games to one lead in the cup finals. The game was a carbon copy of game two in reverse.
Texas had a breakaway and a partial breakaway chance in the first four minutes of the game, but were unable to capitalize.
Despite keeping the Marlies in check in the first period, Texas nearly gave the lead away with some sloppy play in the last minute, but a shot that got through the legs of Mike McKenna slid just wide of the post. The period ended with no score.
Sheldon Dries opened the scoring for the Stars in the first minute of play of the second period, beating Garrett Sparks high, left shoulder. Assists went to Remi Elie and Brent Regner.
Toronto tied the score three minutes later when former Star, Chris Mueller threw the puck into an open net. Assists went to Andreas Johnsson and Ben Smith
Texas almost took the lead back a minute later, but Sparks thwarted a breakaway attempt by Elie with a great save.
As the game progressed, the Marlies took control of the ice and took a 2-1 lead when Calle Rosen scored from the blue line through a mass of bodies. It was his first goal of the finals.
Toronto took over the third period, not letting the Stars get anything consistent going in the third period.
Game four is Thursday night at the HEB Center in Cedar Park.
