The Toronto Marlies started off their four-game road trip on a high note, topping the Rochester Americans 4-1 on Friday night at Blue Cross Arena.
Things started off a little slowly for the Marlies, as they put just four shots on the opposing goal during the opening frame. But, Brett Seney found a way through, scoring his fifth goal of the season late in the first period to give the visitors the lead heading into the intermission.
The Marlies managed to hold off a persistent Rochester offence in the second, while Josh Ho-Sang added his team-leading sixth goal of the season just before the buzzer. The Amerks’ did not go away quietly as J.J. Peterka cut the Toronto lead in half early in the third period. But, despite a good effort from the home side, Mikhail Abramov scored his first professional goal on an Amerks’ empty net late in the third, then Alex Steeves found the back of the empty net as well, sending the Marlies home with a 4-1 win.
Erik Källgren was rock solid between the pipes for the visitors, turning aside 30 of the 31 shots he faced in the game. Toronto now sits third in the North division, behind Rochester and Utica. The Marlies are back in action on Saturday night when they head to Utica for a clash with the Comets. Puck drop is at 7:30pm ET.
