The Toronto Marlies exploded for eight goals on Saturday night, taking the second game of back-to-back contests in Belleville and splitting the weekend series against the Senators.
The scoring didn’t start until there were under four minutes remaining in the opening frame, but Josh Jooris found himself at the top of the crease, put away the loose puck for the game’s opening goal and opened the floodgates. Colin Greening and Griffen Molino had assists.
Carl Grundstrom doubled the lead just 25 seconds later, fighting for space in the slot and getting his stick on a Sam Gagner pass to fire the shot into the net. Calle Rosen had the secondary assist.
The 2-0 lead would hold at the intermission and well into the second, when Chris Mueller made it a 3-0 game with a tip off a Timothy Liljegren one-timer. Dmytro Timashov had the other helper on the goal.
Belleville cut the lead to 3-1 less than two minutes later, but the Marlies reclaimed their three-goal advantage late in the second when Jordan Subban skated in from the point and scored on a shot from the top of the circle. Greening had his second assist of the night on the goal while Andreas Borgman picked up the other.
Grundstrom kept the scoring going early in the third, racing to the far post and connecting on the one-timer after a sweet setup from Mason Marchment. Adam Cracknell had the secondary assist.
Gagner made it 6-1 with a top shelf shot on the power play midway through the third after Jeremy Bracco found him all alone at the hashmarks.
44 seconds later, Marchment cut to the net and redirected Rosen’s point shot to extend the lead further. Borgman also had his second assist of the night on the goal.
Andreas Englund added one for Belleville but just 20 seconds later, Cracknell stole the puck in the slot and scored an unassisted marker to make it 8-2 which held up as the final.
Between the pipes, Eamon McAdam made 23 saves for his first win of the season in his first start for the Marlies. Filip Gustavsson had 33 stops for the Senators.
With the win, the Marlies improve their record to 5-5-0-2 while Belleville falls to 6-8-0-0.
