The Toronto Marlies fell 7-5 to the Grand Rapids Griffins on Saturday evening. The Marlies are 2-1-0-0 against the Griffins this season.
In the first period, Dmitry Ovchinnikov opened the scoring with his second of the season. Nick Robertson followed up just over a minute later with his 11th, and Joseph Blandisi scored a beautiful shorthanded goal late in the frame. The Griffins got one back before the end of the frame, thanks to Dominik Shine, but the Marlies carried a 3-1 lead into the first intermission.
In the second, Teemu Kivihalme tallied his first of the season just 48 seconds in. But, Grand Rapids scored four straight goals in the middle frame to take a 5-4 lead into the break.
In the third, Grand Rapids continued to press, as Riley Barber and Brian Lashoff added to the Griffins lead. Bobby McMann scored a late goal for the Marlies but it wasn’t enough. The two teams meet again on Sunday at Coca-Cola Coliseum. Puck drop is at 4:00pm ET.
