The Marlies got back in the win column on Friday, edging the Laval Rocket 3-2 in the first half of a back-to-back.
The game started off as a back and forth affair as the goaltenders were tested early and often. The Rocket had a slight edge in shots in the opening frame, outshooting the Marlies 10-9, but neither team found the back of the net as the game remained scoreless through 20 minutes of play.
The floodgates opened in the second period with Pontus Aberg getting things started on the power play. Aberg one-timed a cross-ice pass from Jeremy Bracco, beating Keith Kinkaid on the short side to open the scoring. Timothy Liljegren picked up the secondary assist on the power play goal. 23 seconds later, Kalle Kossila buried a rebound to quickly put the Marlies ahead 2-0 with his first of the season. Mason Marchment and Matt Read assisted on the goal. 36 seconds after the second goal, Joseph Duszak walked in from the blue line and fired a shot past Kinkaid to make it 3-0. The Marlies’ three goals were scored in 59 seconds to quickly give themselves a three-goal cushion. The Rocket responded late in the frame with back-to-back goals 28 seconds apart to come back within one heading into the third period.
The Marlies killed off two penalties in the third period to preserve their lead while Kasimir Kaskisuo turned away 10 shots to prevent overtime. Following tonight’s 3-2 win, the Marlies are 9-4-2-1 against North Division opponents and are 2-0-0-1 against the Laval Rocket.
