The Toronto Marlies hosted the Manitoba Moose for a cross-conference match up on Wednesday. It was an early start at Coca-Cola Coliseum as the Marlies welcomed over 7,500 Toronto District School Board students for their first School Day Game of the season.

The Marlies came out strong in the opening minutes, feeding off the energy from the sold-out crowd. At 7:22, Manitoba’s Justin Woods was called for holding, giving the Marlies an early opportunity on the man-advantage. The Marlies capitalized 30 seconds into the power play as Michael Carcone buried a sweet feed from Jeremy Bracco. Calle Rosen picked up the secondary assist on Carcone’s 13thof the season. Near the end of the frame the Marlies extended their lead to 2-0 as a shot from Vincent LoVerde redirected off traffic in front of the net. Dmytro Timashov and Pierre Engvall assisted on LoVerde’s second of the season. The Marlies outshot the Moose 14-7 in the opening frame and held a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
The Moose cut the deficit at 5:50 of the middle stanza when Jimmy Oligny beat Hutchinson on a breakaway. The goal was Oligny’s first of the season and was unassisted. The Marlies were quick to respond as Gabriel Gagne beat Eric Comrie with a shot from the point to restore their two-goal lead. Tanner MacMaster and Martin Marincin assisted on Gagne’s sixth of the season. Later in the frame, the Marlies went up by three after Carcone found the loose puck in the crease and backhanded it past Comrie. Engvall and Timashov assisted on Carcone’s second of the game and the Marlies held a 4-1 lead heading into the final frame.
Manitoba came close to tying things up with two late goals with an extra attacker. Logan Shaw brought the Moose within two at 16:51 and Nelson Nogier brought them within one with one second remaining in regulation. The whistle blew following the next faceoff as the Marlies edged the visiting Moose 4-3.
Dmytro Timashov (two assists), Pierre Engvall (two assists) and Michael Carcone (two goals) all had two-point games.
