Markstrom backstops Canucks to third straight win, 3-2, over Oilers

In Edmonton Saturday night, the Vancouver Canucks won their third straight, a feat not accomplished since going 4-0-0 to start the season, behind 42 saves from Jacob Markstrom in a 3-2 shootout win over the Oilers.

Bo Horvat was the only scorer in the skills competition to get the win for the Canucks as they improved to 17-18-3 on the season.

“We played a great overall game tonight, there are obviously things we still need to work on, but we should be happy with that win,” Horvat said. “Both of our goalies have been amazing, and [Markstrom] was especially incredible tonight. He made a great glove save in the last minute to keep us in it. He’s been huge all year for us in important times and it was great to see him get the win.”

Sven Baertschi and Alexandre Burrows scored in regulation for Vancouver who are starting feel better about their game.

“Maybe we were a little sloppy. Not our best game of the season by any means, but we ran into a hot goalie and found a way to get a point. Every point is obviously huge. We battled hard. Exciting overtime for sure, we were really jumping,” the Oilers’ Ryan Nugent Hopkins said.

The Oilers needed a goal from Connor McDavid with just 1:33 remaining in the third period to push the match to extra time.

“We were flat. We were flat, our execution was poor, we played the game standing still,” Oilers coach Todd McLellan said. “We want to pass the puck from one stationary player to another stationary guy to another stationary player. We didn’t go after it and skate against a team that played an overtime game the night before. When you stand around and try to do it the easy way, it doesn’t work.”

Drake Caggiula also scored for Edmonton.

“They have a really skilled offensive team and a really good power play,” Markstrom said. “Even though they had a lot of shots on the board, I though most of them were from the outside or from a bad angle. I thought our guys did a really good job with rebounds and stuff like that.”
