ESTERO, FL –– The Maine Mariners, proud affiliates of the NHL’s Boston Bruins and AHL’s Providence Bruins, edged out the Florida Everblades 1-0 in a shootout on Saturday night at Hertz Arena in Estero. Xander Lamppa came up with the game-winning goal in the fourth round of the shootout while Brad Arvanitis made 36 saves through regulation in overtime for his second shutout of the season.
The game was dominated by defense and goaltending throughout the game, sending it into overtime still tied 0-0.
Florida thought they had won the game late in overtime when Logan Lambdin tipped in a puck that was sitting on Brad Arvanitis’ pad, but a quick whistle bailed out the Mariners, keeping the game alive.
In the shootout, Reid Duke beat Arvanitis in the third round, forcing Sebastian Vidmar to score to extend the game, which he did. After Arvanitis stopped Lambdin, Lamppa deked Cam Johnson to win the game.
The shutout was the third of Arvanitis’ ECHL career. The Mariners took four of a possible six points in the home of the top team in the Eastern Conference.
The Mariners (23-15-5-2) continue their road trip with three games next weekend in Bloomington, IL against the Bison.
