Marcinew, Monarchs drop Admirals

NORFOLK, VA – Matt Marcinew recorded a career-high four points, and the Manchester Monarchs came from behind to beat the Norfolk Admirals 4-1 Friday night at Scope Arena.

The Monarchs (5-3-0-1) have now taken the first two meetings of the season against the Admirals (2-7-0-0) and look to sweep the three-game set Saturday night.

The Admirals struck early when Thomas Schutt scored his first goal of the season on the first Norfolk shot of the night, just 45 seconds into the game. Schutt charged down the right boards to the dot, where he let a wrister go that beat the blocker of Monarchs goaltender Evan Cowley, to put Norfolk up 1-0.

Manchester tied the game on the power play at 17:42 of the second period when Marcinew scored his  third goal of the season. Marcinew found the puck on his backhand just outside the blue paint after a scrum in front of Admirals goaltender Jake Paterson, and chipped home the power-play marker to tie the game at 1-1.

The Monarchs took their first lead of the game when Marcinew struck again at 1:33 of the third period. After a face-off win to the left point, Joel Lowry fired a shot on Paterson that was saved, but Marcinew connected with the bouncing rebound from the low slot for his second goal of the game to put the Monarchs up 2-1.

Manchester extended the lead when Tony Cameranesi potted his third goal of the season at 12:28 of the final frame. After a turnover in the Admirals zone, Marcinew sent a cross-slot pass to Cameranesi who was all alone just below the right hash for the redirect into Paterson’s open cage to push the Monarchs lead to 3-1.

Kevin Morris put the game on ice when he scored his third goal of the season at 18:52 of the third period. Morris was camped in front of Paterson while the Monarchs were on the power play, and tipped-home a Colton Saucerman slapper from the left point to end the scoring at 4-1.

The Monarchs are back on the ice Saturday, Nov. 4th at 7 p.m. when they complete their three-game set with the Admirals at Scope Arena.
