In Toronto, it was Hockey Night in Canada, and the Maple Leafs were ready. On Saturday night the Leafs tuned up the Edmonton Oilers in a 6-3 win.
The game was not as close as the score would suggest. The Maple Leafs held a 5-0 lead in the game before the Oilers rallied with three goals in the third period to close within 5-3.
Auston Matthews potted his 58th of the season when he hit an empty net to seal the 6-3 win with 13 seconds left on the game clock.
Ilya Samsonov made 31 saves in the game before being taken off the ice with an apparent lower body injury at 16:21 of the third period.
Martin Jones made five saves in relief.
The Maple Leafs moved to 40-20-9.
Bobby McMann, who had a double in the win, scored at 4:17 of the opening stanza to give the Leafs a 1-0 lead, scoring off a pass at the top of blue paint.
William Nylander pushed the lead to 2-0 at 18:14, scoring off a deflection on a power play .
Pontus Holmberg also hit for a double for Toronto, his first came at 8:02 of the middle frame to give the Leafs a 3-0 advantage.
Holmberg collected his double at 11:04, scoring from low near the crease for a 4-0 lead.
McMann collected his double at 15:46, to balloon the lead to 5-0 headed to the third period.
The Oilers dropped to 42-22-4,snapping a six-game point streak.
In the third period, the Oilers attempted a comeback, but fell short.
The Oilers’ Zach Hyman started the rally at 4:59 with a power play marker to trim the deficit to 5-1. It was his 49th goal of the season.
Corey Perry scored off another power play at 8:32Â to cut the gap to 5-2.
Leon Draisaitl scored from the left circle at 16:21 to get the deficit to 5-3, but that was as close as the offense would take them.
Stuart Skinner got the start for the Oilers, he made 18 saves, yielding five goals before getting the hook in the second intermission.
Calvin Pickard made five saves in a mop up role.
