In Detroit, the Toronto Maple Leafs improved to 3-0-0 under new head coach Sheldon Keefe after a 6-0 dismantling of the Red Wings,
The Leafs took 54 shots on goal and were 1-for-1 on the power play.
Frederik Andersen made 25 saves to get the shutout.
“We want to be a team that can play with a lead, and I thought we did a good job of that tonight,” Keefe said. “I really liked the way we started the first two periods: winning face-offs, getting the puck in deep, and forcing breaks with our pressure.”
Andreas Johnsson struck twice and added an assist in the win.
“We were able to get sustained pressure in the offensive zone and it just kept going,” Johnsson said. “That was the big part of our game tonight.”
Detroit is 0502 in their last seven.
“This is really tough, especially at home in front of a big crowd,” Detroit’s Dylan Larkin said. “We don’t have any answers right now, but we have to remember this feeling and find a way to get out of this.”
Tyson Barrie continued his breakout from a scoring slump since joining the Leafs, he had his third goal and three games.
“A lot of this is due to the way the whole team is playing,” Barrie said. “We’re getting everybody involved in the offense. Once you get a goal and a couple points, you start to feel a lot better.”
John Tavares, William Nylander and Travis Dermott also scored for Toronto.
“I think we’re trying to support each other and not force pucks at the net,” Johnsson said. “We’re waiting to find a late guy or move it, and I think that’s been the key.”

Jimmy Howard made 11 saves as the starter for Detroit, he surrendered three goals before leaving the game with an injury.
“I knew Jimmy was hurt, and I kind of wanted him to stay down, but your instincts are to keep going,” Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. “You don’t know if you’ll get a whistle, so you try to play through it.”
Jonathan Bernier, who was sick, made 37 saves in relief.
“That took a lot of guts by [Bernier],” Blashill said. “We tried to get another goalie here, but no one was available, so we asked him if he could play. I kept asking if he was OK, and he said he could keep going.”
