Maple Leafs thrash Blues

In St Louis, the Toronto Maple Leafs potted four first goals en route to a 5-2 win over the Blues on Saturday night.

Zach Hyman had two strikes in win over Blues

Auston Matthews and Zach Hyman led the way with two goals each in the win.

“We got off to a good start,” Matthews said. “[Frederik] Andersen made some big saves, and we got to roll all four lines.”

Frederik Andersen made 26 saves in the win.

“It’s (scoring) a huge relief,” Matthews said. “It kind of gets you going, gets your confidence back. I’ve just got to try and get my chances, shoot the puck as much as I can, and eventually I think it’s going to go in.”

Ivan Barbashev and David Perron were the Blues strikers.

“We gave them some pretty good chances, obviously the shorthanded one,” Blues defenseman Alex Pietrangelo said. “We were a little bit sloppy with the puck, we knew we had to defend against these guys, obviously highly skilled. Just weren’t ready. It happens. At the start of the first period, I thought we had some decent looks. Once that team gets momentum offensively, they’re going to keep going. We know what we did wrong.”

Jason Spezza also scored for the Leafs.

“We played with confidence a little bit better,” Spezza said. “We had some pretty good moments and got rewarded with some of our chances.”

Jordan Binnington got the start for the Blues but was given the hook in the fist intermission after making just seven saves.

“We’re not worried about him,” Ryan O’Reilly said. “He’s always responded well and the whole season he’s been our best player. I thought tonight there were kind of a couple missed shots and bad bounces that happened that do happen in the game of hockey and it’s not his fault. I’m not worried about him at all. He’s going to do his thing. We just have to be better in front of him to make it easier for him.”

Jake Allen made 15 saves in relief
