PHILADELPHIA – The Flyers’ four-game winning streak came to a crashing end on Sunday when the Toronto Maple Leafs posted six goals in a 6-2 win.
Six different skaters were om the scoresheet for the Leafs.
Matt Murray made 34 saves in the Toronto win.
“I thought our start was really good,” Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said. “We made good on a lot of our chances and obviously scored a bunch of goals, and that put us in a good spot in the game. I didn’t think we had our best game by any means, relied on our goaltender probably too much, but he was terrific.”
The Maple Leafs improved to 25-9-7.
Toronto took a 2-0 lead on goals from Calle Jarnkrok and Zach Aston-Reese in the first period.
“I’m just trying to play my game,” Jarnkrok said. “Try to work as hard as I can then create some space for those two (Marner and Tavares).”
The Flyers got one back on a strike from Travis Konecny to send to the second period 2-1.
“I felt like there were times we were in the game, but when we got momentum they grabbed it right back,” Konecny said.
The Flyers dropped to 15-18-7.
“We self-destructed,” Flyers coach John Tortorella said. “We just can’t overcome some of the things we give them for free. … We weren’t sharp. We haven’t got spanked like that in a while, and we deserved it. Not only through self-destruction, but our positioning, just everything about our game defensively, we just weren’t on.”
The Maple Leafs’ Conor Timmins hit for his first career NHL goal in the middle frame for a 3-1 lead.
“I think I was squeezing my stick a little on some opportunities in these first 30 games,” Timmins said. “I just had to shoot more pucks, and luckily that went in. It was a nice feeling.”
The Flyers cut it back to a one-goal deficit on a marker from Nicolas Deslauriers, but Timothy Liljegren scored a shorthanded goal for the Leafs to get it back to two at 4-2.
John Tavares made it 5-2 in the middle frame, and Auston Matthews (power play) scored in the third period for the 6-2 final.
Carter Hart made 29 saves in the Flyers loss.
