Maple Leafs double up Detroit, 4-2

In Detroit, the Red Wings  took a 1-0 lead over the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first period on Monday night.

That was pretty much it for the Wings, as the Maple Leafs reeled off four straight goals, two each in the first and second periods to take a 4-2 win.

“This was our best game of the trip,” Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said. “Our goaltender was outstanding, just like he’s been all trip. The way he’s playing, if he sees it, he’s stopping it.”

Matt Murray made 41 saves in the Maple Leafs win, Toronto is 7-0-2 in their last nine games.

Mitchell Marner had a strike in the middle frame to extend his point streak to 17 games.

“It’s a cool thing, but I know you never achieve anything in this game on your own,” Marner said.

Moritz Seider staked the Red Wings to the early lead.

“We had a lot of chances, but we just didn’t put the puck in the net,” Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin said. “Give them credit, especially Murray, but we had looks in the slot and all around it. We just didn’t capitalize.”

Toronto improved to 14-5-5.

Auston Matthews and William Nylander scored to give the Maple Leafs a 2-1 lead headed to the second period.

In the middle frame, Marner made it 3-1, and Rasmus Sandin scored to push the advantage to 4-1 for Toronto.

Detroit dropped to 11-6-4.

Ville Husso made nine saves and surrendered all four Leafs goals before getting the hook midway through the second period.

“I’m sure [Husso] would probably want three of those four goals back, but we put him in a tough spot,” Lalonde said. “We didn’t give up a shot until halfway through the first period, but that was a 3-on-1 with Auston Matthews in the slot, and then we take a penalty.”

Alex Nedeljkovic made eight saves in relief through the back half of the game.

“You never want to see your goalie get pulled, but [Husso] would be the first one to say he would wanted a couple of those back,” Larkin said. “He said that to us, but we know we’ve been relying on him a lot lately.”
