Maple Leafs double-up Boston, 4-2

In Toronto Monday night, the Maple Leafs entertained the Boston Bruins who are a depleted squad with four skaters sidelined.

But Frederik Andersen made 38 saves for Toronto as they defeated the Bruins, 4-2.

“We just tried to play our game, we can’t really worry about who they have in the lineup or don’t,” Andersen said . “We want to play our game, that’s the way we’ve been successful and I thought we did a good job today.”

Igor Ozhiganov, Josh Leivo and Travis Dermott scored for the Leafs.

“It was a tough game against these guys like it always is, but I think we played well,” Dermott said. “We worked hard from the start of the game to the end, but [Andersen] made some stops that helped us out and overall, I think we can be pretty happy with this game.”

David Pastrnak struck for both Boston goals.

“The first period they were better than us,” Pastrnak said. “Something was said in the locker room (in the first intermission), and after that we played kind of our game and battled hard. Unfortunately, we came short, but it’s a hard loss. Toronto is a good team and we knew it wouldn’t be easy.”

Boston dropped to 13-7-4.

Zach Hyman scored an empty-netter to seal it with 1:35 left in regulation.

The Leafs improved to 17-8-0.

Jaroslav Halak made 27 saves

“We played hard. We’re not going to win every game, but I think we generated lots of offensive zone time. There’s always good things, but tonight more than most nights when you lose. I thought at the end of the day we probably deserved a better fate, but their goaltender was excellent,” Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy said after the loss.

Boston was short several of the mainstays including Patrice Bergeron, Zdeno Chara, Charlie McAvoy and Brandon Carlo.

“I think for the most part we battled hard,” Halak said. “The second period was our best period; we had some chances and hit some posts. Just no excuse though, we lost tonight. We need to regroup and win the next one.”
