Maple Leafs blow big lead, down Flames on penalties, 5-4 Nylander pushes streak to 14 games

In Toronto, the Maple Leafs were pushed to extra time on Friday night when the Calgary Flames rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the second period, and tied the game, 4-4, on a strike from Martin Pospisil  at 3:22 of the third.

The extra session solved nothing, and Max Domi was credited with the deciding marker on penalties for the 5-4 win to the Leafs over Calgary.

Joseph Woll made 24 saves through the extra session, and four saves on penalties, for the win.

The Leafs moved to 7-5-2.

William Nylander, who had a double in the win,  scored off the power play at 3:01 of the first for a 1-0 advantage to Toronto.

Calgary’s Connor Zary tied it, 1-1, at 7:02 of the first.

The Maple Leafs grabbed a 2-1 lead at 8:18 of the first stanza on a marker from Calle Jarnkrok .

“I liked that we didn’t get rattled,” Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe said. “We didn’t give the game away. After they made it 4-4 might have been the best we played all game. Third period was our best period, so sometimes things don’t go your way, but again here tonight, just a good game. A lot of good things for us.”

Nylander scored his double on a shorthanded goal at 1:06 of the middle frame for a 3-1 advantage.

John Tavares extended the lead to 4-1 at 4:45 of the second.

“A lot of good signs for us tonight,” Tavares said. “Stuff we talked about over the last 24 hours. We know we need to continue to defend better and keep the puck out of our net. When we have leads, especially three-goal leads, maintaining those and staying controlled, but it’s inevitable goals are going to go in, mistakes will happen and it’s just how we respond to those, and I liked our response throughout the game. They crawled their way [back], and we just continued to push forward.”

From the, Calgary rallied back with three unanswered goals.

Less than a minute after the Tavares goal, Nikita Zadorov scored to cut the deficit to 4-2.

“When you look at the first three goals, they were gifts that we gave them and then we took on some water for sure in the third period,” Flames coach Ryan Huska said. “The half-full part is that we battled back, we were down 4-1 and we found a way to get a point.”

Clagary pulled within one on a strike by A.J. Greer at 12:22  of the second, to send the game to the third, at 4-3.

Calgary dropped to 4-7-2.

“That resiliency. I mean, that’s always good to see,” Calgary forward Nazem Kadri said. “Character, effort, that’s always a positive especially if there’s a takeaway from today’s game, just being able to secure a point and get out of here with at least one or two points.”

Dan Vladar made 32 saves in the loss.
